Zimbabwe Guide

Ownership Transfer

A step-by-step guide to legally transferring vehicle ownership in Zimbabwe through ZINARA.

Important: Always transfer ownership at a ZINARA office, never rely on a handwritten letter alone. Failure to transfer officially can create legal and insurance complications.
01

Agree on Sale Price

Seller and buyer agree on a price. Draft a Sale Agreement letter (available as a template below) signed by both parties.

02

Gather Required Documents

Seller provides: Original logbook, Valid ID (national ID or passport), ZINARA clearance certificate. Buyer provides: Valid ID and proof of address.

03

ZINARA Transfer

Both parties visit the ZINARA office. Complete Form ZV1 (change of ownership). Pay the transfer fee (approx. $20–$40 USD depending on vehicle class).

04

Logbook Update

The logbook is presented for endorsement. A new logbook may be issued in the buyer's name within 2–4 weeks.

05

Insurance Transfer

Buyer arranges new insurance immediately. The seller should cancel or notify their insurer on the date of transfer.

06

ZIMRA Confirmation

If the vehicle was imported, ensure ZIMRA has the correct owner on file. Bring import duty payment receipts if needed.
